A Legacy of Fellowship: The History of the TCK OBA

Today, the Trinity College Kandy Old Boys’ Association (TCK OBA) is a formidable and vibrant global network, uniting generations of Trinitians across continents. From Colombo to London, Melbourne to Toronto, our association is a powerful testament to the enduring bonds forged at our alma mater. But this influential body grew from humble, yet visionary, beginnings over 130 years ago.

The Genesis of a Tradition (1892)

Our story begins in 1892. The idea of forming an association to keep past students connected to the school and to each other was championed by Rev. Napier Clavering. He saw the deep pride so many had in acknowledging Trinity College as their alma mater and sought to formalise that spirit.

This vision swiftly took root. A preliminary meeting was convened in December 1892 at the Principal’s bungalow, laying the foundational framework for what was to come. At this inaugural gathering, the association’s first office bearers were appointed:

    • President: The Principal (ex-officio)

    • Vice-President: Mr. J.H. Sproule

    • Secretary & Treasurer: Mr. J.W. Wirakoon

This marked the official birth of the TCK OBA, establishing it as one of the oldest and most prestigious alumni associations in Sri Lanka.

Growth, Milestones, and a Global Reach

From this dedicated founding group, the OBA began its steady and impressive growth. A significant milestone was reached in 1918, when Mr. T.B.L. Moonamale was appointed President, earning the distinction of being the first Old Boy to hold the association’s highest office.

The tradition of fellowship and “giving back” was woven into our fabric from the very start. The first Annual General Meeting (AGM) in 1893 set a precedent that continues to this day, blending formal proceedings with a cricket match, a tiffin, and services at the Chapel.

As Trinitians began to make their mark across Sri Lanka and the world, so too did the OBA. Parent bodies and branch associations flourished, creating a global support system for Old Boys and a powerful engine for philanthropy directed at the College.

Our Enduring Mission

For over a century, the TCK OBA has served as a proud custodian of Trinity’s values and traditions. Our mission is twofold: to foster an unbreakable bond of fellowship among all Old Boys and to provide unwavering support for our alma mater, ensuring its continued excellence for future generations.

This is not just a statement; it is our practice. In recent years, the OBA (through its central body, dedicated branches, and passionate “batches”) has been instrumental in spearheading, funding, and supporting multiple crucial school projects, both large and small. This unwavering commitment to the College’s development, including significant contributions to landmark campaigns like the Trinity150 (T150) projects, underscores our dedication to its future

Our Story Continues

The history of the TCK OBA is the collective story of every Old Boy. It is a legacy of leadership, service, and camaraderie. As we look to the future, we invite every Trinitian to join us, to participate in this proud tradition, and to help write the next chapter in our remarkable history.
